What Might be Happening

Every day we're faced with interacting with other people. And when we struggle with communication, these interactions can be brutal. You may find yourself unable to articulate what you are really wanting to say, which can cause confusion and even conflict in your relationships. You may freeze up with anxiety in group settings, fearful of saying the wrong thing or looking foolish. You likely sit on the edge of conversations, not really contributing, even though you really want to. You may also have trouble knowing how to approach tougher conversations - chats about emotions, money, receiving or giving feedback - anything that could potentially turn into a confrontation. This makes it hard for you to stand up for yourself and set boundaries. You lack the confidence to use your voice effectively. You may also have difficulty listening to others, waiting for your turn to respond instead of fully understanding what is being said. You may have filters and misinterpret what others say, which can cause conflict. Having trouble with communication is a heavy burden, one that is tough to solve on your own.

Therapy can help you focus on listening more, and recognizing when you need to take someone at face value, or do some decoding. You'll have to practice this new way of communicating before you're fully comfortable, but doing so will increase your confidence and trust in yourself to navigate conversations more effectively.
