Worry & Anxiety

What Might be Happening
Anxiety is a powerful emotion, one that is baked into every single one of us. Anxiety is meant to get our attention - it's our nervous system trying to tell us when there's a threat nearby, to get us to problem solve, and to encourage us to tap into our intuition. Unfortunately, the symptoms of anxiety can become so overwhelming that we become disempowered and unable to calm ourselves. You may experience anxiety as tightness in the chest, restlessness, irritability, racing thoughts, catastrophizing, inability to make a decision, or difficulty falling and staying asleep. You may get angrier than usual, avoid spending time with people, shirk your commitments, forget things - there are too many symptoms of anxiety to list them all. And because these symptoms are so uncomfortable, you may become anxious at the slightest hint of anxiety showing up, which only amplifies the discomfort you feel. Anxiety unchecked can keep you from showing up in your life the way you want to.

How Therapy Can Help
Therapy can act as a balm to anxiety. Even just talking about what's going on inside of your mind can help reduce some of the pressure. Therapy can help you make sense of what's going on - understanding what fuels the anxiety. You'll get to understand how your circumstances, history, and thinking patterns contribute to your nervous system being activated. Through this understanding, you'll be able to find the tools to help you calm your mind, slow down your body, and gain some peace and ease. This may involve changing some of your circumstances, shifting your mindset, and even building trust in yourself and your capability to handle tough situations. Therapy can help you learn how to navigate anxiety when it shows up. The goal is not to get rid of the anxiety - it's an important tool that humans have developed. Instead, therapy will help you minimize the impact of anxiety and co-exist with it peaceably.
